NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A stray kitten found in Burlington County tested positive for rabies this week.

A Mount Holly resident said she found the kitten in her yard. It was taken to the Burlington County Animal Shelter where it tested positive for rabies on Thursday, Aug. 8, and was humanely put down.

According to the Burlington County Health Department, the kitten had no direct contact with any animals at the shelter.

Rabies, spread to humans and pets through bites or scratches from an infected animal, is a viral disease that can be fatal if immediate treatment is not sought, according to the CDC.

Ericka Haines, director of the animal shelter, says during rainy weather bats that could be carrying rabies sometimes make their way into people's homes.

“When a bat bites, you’re not going to feel it. It’s microscopic. So we always tell people even if there is a bat in your home to make sure you seek medical attention from your doctor and advisement from them as well,” Haines said.

Officials advise people not to handle strays or wild animals and instead call police or animal control officers. They also recommend making sure your pets are up to date on their rabies shots.

The Health Department has identified individuals who were exposed to this kitten and urge anyone who was scratched or bitten by a stray or wild animal to contact their health department. Burlington County’s department can be reached at 609-265-5548.

According to the CDC, 60,000 Americans receive medical care each year following a potential rabies exposure.
