
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The severe pollution in certain parts of China has been a well documented issue, and the industrialization of the highly populated country has had a dramatic impact.
A new study from Fudan University in Shanghai following almost 8,000 pregnant women found that high levels of ozone — which is an issue in the region — has an effect on pregnancy. According to the study, the exposure to high levels of ozone increases the risk of high blood pressure in pregnancy.
Gestational hypertension, a form of high blood pressure in pregnancy, can be harmful to the mother and fetus if not controlled. A report in the Journal of the American Medical Association also notes that high ozone levels can increase cardiovascular risk for both men and women throughout life.
