PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Union will welcome back full capacity crowds to Subaru Park in Chester starting June 23.
They are the first major professional team in the region to announce the full expansion of in-game attendance.
“We’re really excited to welcome back fans,” said team President Tim McDermott in an interview provided by the Union. “The fans bring the energy. They make sports sports; they make the special part of sports.”
McDermott said they are still working to create an environment that is safe for everyone, but that environment will not affect die-hard fans who want their regular view of the game.
“This is great for season ticketholders. We’ve been asked for weeks and months, ‘When can I get my seat back?’ so they will absolutely be able to get their seat back,” he said. “And what we’ll also do is put single-game tickets on sale now and group tickets.”
Although more fans will be in the seats, there will still be some COVID-19 protocols.
“Masks will still be required, and for those people who might not feel comfortable sitting side by side with somebody, we’ll have some seats set aside so that they’re still distanced,” said McDermott. “They can have that flexibility and spacing apart from other fans.”
Last week, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced the state will lift all COVID-19 mitigation orders except masking on Memorial Day.
Philadelphia’s COVID-19 restrictions operate separately from the rest of the state. As such, the Union, which play in Delaware County, can follow state mandates and expand its capacity by June.
Subaru Park has not seen a full-capacity crowd since 2019.
