PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A suspect allegedly involved in at least three incidents where shots were fired, two carjackings, and a long chase with law enforcement officers Friday in Delaware was shot and killed. The series of incidents led to the closure of I-95 in both directions near Wilmington.

Delaware State Police say that officers responded to a report of a suspicious person with a gun on the 100 block of Ayre Street in Newark at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.

When law enforcement found the suspect, a chase on foot began. Shots were fired, striking a vocational-technical school bus. No one was hurt.

The suspect then allegedly fled the scene on foot to the area of Delaware State Highway 141 and Market Street.

Police say he tried carjacking someone before successfully carjacking a victim and took officers on a long pursuit around the New Castle and Newark areas, ending in the area around the Red Roof Inn by I-95 and Route 896.

He then fled on foot to an area of I-95 southbound and tried to carjack two others unsuccessfully, according to police.

“The suspect successfully carjacks a second victim. Additional gunshots were fired. The suspect flees I-95 southbound to the area just south of 896, where more gunshots were fired,” said Delaware State Police Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell.

The suspect was shot and killed at that point, according to police.

I-95 remained closed throughout much of Friday morning and into the late afternoon. (Click here for the latest traffic maps.)

"We thank the public for their patience this morning. We know the roadways were very gridlocked,” said Hatchell.

State Police ask anyone who witnessed these incidents to call 302-741-2703.
