WYNNEWOOD, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating after someone spray-painted a swastika on a sign outside a synagogue in Wynnewood, Montgomery County — the second act of antisemitic vandalism there in 10 days.

As congregants arrived at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El on Sunday morning, they found a swastika spray-painted in red on the synagogue’s sign. The swastika was painted over a banner that reads “OUR COMMUNITY STANDS WITH ISRAEL.”

“The associate executive director was here and notified the authorities, and then myself and the president in rapid succession,” recalled Rabbi Ethan Witkovsky.

The sign was also defaced with antisemitic vandalism 10 days earlier, on March 22. Days prior in neighboring Narberth, a Jewish-owned restaurant was also vandalized with “free Gaza” spray-painted on the side of its building.

Since sharing a photo of the vandalism on social media, Witkovsky said the synagogue has received support from Jewish and non-Jewish communities.

“We have remained strong. We have remained dedicated to the practice of our way of life. And so when things like this happen, the outpouring of unity and support both within our community, but also more importantly outside of our community, from the Jews and non-Jews around us, has been truly heartwarming,” he said.

“We all agree no matter who we are that hatred and this kind of violent rhetoric is inexcusable.”

After speaking with Witkovsky, Gov. Josh Shapiro said on X, “These acts of hate will never change the fact that no matter what you look like, where you come from, who you love, or who you do and don’t pray to, you belong here in Pennsylvania.”

Pennsylvania State and Lower Merion police are investigating further.
