NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Two months after a woman was killed in a Norristown car crash, an 18-year-old has been charged with her death.
Adan Ortiz-Gonzalez faces homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and several other related charges in the Feb. 26 death of 37-year-old Katty Campos of Ambler.
Authorities say Ortiz-Gonzalez was with his girlfriend and two younger siblings in his Nissan Armada SUV, going at least 60 mph down Dekalb Street in a 25 mph zone. The teen blew a stop sign and crashed into Campos at the intersection of Dekalb and Brown streets, pushing her Nissan Sentra 50 feet away from the intersection, off the road and into a tree.
Campos was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ortiz-Gonzalez and the other passengers in his car all went to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Investigators determined Campos' Sentra would have cleared the intersection if Ortiz-Gonzalez hadn't exceeded the speed limit.
According to an obituary, Campos was described as an avid reader who was "caring, strong-willed and selfless."
Ortiz-Gonzalez surrendered to police on Tuesday. His bail is set at $50,000, of which he has to post 10%, and he is not allowed to drive. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 3.
