PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia authorities said a teenage girl killed her newborn shortly after giving birth inside a Northern Liberties apartment on Saturday.
The teen has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, possessing an instrument of a crime, tampering with evidence, and related offenses.
Police said it was just before 1 p.m. on Saturday when officers found the child unresponsive at an apartment on American Street, near George Street. She was pronounced dead minutes later.
A cause of death has not been revealed, but police said the baby had puncture wounds.
Under Pennsylvania’s Safe Haven law, unharmed newborn babies up to 4 weeks old can be anonymously taken to police and fire stations, hospitals or emergency medical facilities without repercussions.
