14-year-old in custody for SEPTA subway shooting

A 19-year-old remains in critical condition

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 14-year-old has turned himself in for Thursday’s shooting at the SEPTA subway stop at 15th and Market streets in Center City.

A 19-year-old remains in critical condition, after being shot in the stomach, hand and chest.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Frank Vanore said the teen was with his mother when he turned himself in.

“He’s absolutely the one who fired the gun,” said Vanore.

SEPTA Transit Police said the incident began after a verbal altercation on the eastbound Market-Frankford Line train platform shortly after noon.

SEPTA police said they were patrolling the station and immediately responded, giving first aid to the victim and carrying him out of the station.

Officials said the shooter had escaped from the scene in a group of passengers fleeing the station.

Earlier Friday, transit riders in Center City lamented that Philadelphia’s gun violence crisis continues to plague neighborhoods across the city at all times of day.

“You got parents on the train, grandparents, kids,” said Daryl, who declined to provide his last name. “They don’t care. Philadelphia is getting real out of hand.”
