Teen shot near North Philadelphia school

Shooting near Broad Street was second this week as students were leaving city schools

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the second time this week, a shooting took place less than a block away from a school where students were being dismissed for the day.

Philadelphia police said it was just before 1 p.m. Friday when officers heard multiple shots near Broad Street and Susquehanna Avenue.

Soon after, they received reports about a large group of kids running from the area and shooting at one another in front of a Rite Aid store at the same corner.

About 20 minutes later, police said they found a 17-year-old shot in the leg, just a couple of blocks away at York & Carlisle streets.

He was taken to the hospital and then placed under arrest. Police said a weapon was recovered.

A memo circulating from Tech Friere Charter School, which is on the same block, says a 17-year-old and at least one other student were involved in the incident which is still being investigated.

The school’s website said every member of the Tech Freire community has access to free individual and family counseling services as part of their commitment to peace.

Earlier this week, a 16-year-old was shot and killed while waiting at a bus stop outside the Philadelphia Learning Academy in West Philly.

Philadelphia police have recently implemented a safe corridors program to increase police presence around schools at risk for violence.

"We don’t have any official information to share at this time. We’re focusing on taking care of our students and families and making sure all of us have what we need to start to process and heal," a school spokesperson said.
