PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A teenager who was babysitting two young girls in East Mount Airy was shot inside an apartment late Monday night.

It happened just before midnight on East Cliveden Street, blocks away from Germantown Avenue. The 16-year-old boy was in a family member’s first-floor apartment when he heard a knock at the door, police said.

“At least one male entered the property and fired six shots, striking [the teen in] the abdomen and the arm,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Officers took the victim to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The children he was babysitting were not hurt, though it was a very close call.

“We’re very, very lucky that those two children, ages 5 and 7, were not struck by gunfire,” Small said.” “There’s multiple bullet holes in the living room wall right near where these children were sleeping on the couch.”

Another teen was in the apartment but was not hurt, investigators said.

Police are speaking with witnesses and looking through surveillance footage from the apartment complex. Police did not immediately release a description of the shooter. No one was arrested.
