PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are trying to figure out who stole the front doors from an apartment building in Philadelphia's Fairmount neighborhood.

There is definitely something off at the apartment building at 20th and Green streets. The dark-green door frame is there, but the large, antique doors of the same color, with two windows and a golden handle handle, are gone. The street view on Google Maps shows what's missing.

Police say, some time Saturday morning, someone or a few people came by and took the doors right off the hinges.

Neighbor Dave Tanenbaum told NBC 10 it's a head scratcher.

"It's just a hard thing to take. I would imagine it was pretty loud. You know it's not easy to take doors out from the outside," he said.

"I feel like there's a lot of antique shops around here and random nicknack places so I don't know if you can sell a door for parts."

A local expert in the salvage business says this type of thing happens more often than many may think. He said lot of times stolen doors end up being sold down south for hundreds or thousands of dollars, while the victim is left to pay even more to replace what was stolen.

He says he has to be careful and stay away from people trying to sell him things who don't seem reputable.
