19-year-old from Trenton is first American to run to Olympic gold in 800m since 1968

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nineteen-year-old Athing Mu from Trenton, New Jersey, became an Olympic champion Tuesday morning in Tokyo.

Mu won gold in the women’s 800-meter event in track and field. Her time of 1:55:21 set a new national record.

She is also the first American to win this event since 1968.

According to her Team USA bio, Mu’s parents emigrated from Sudan before she was born in Trenton.

She started running track around the age of 6 and is a 2020 graduate of Trenton Central High School. Her older brother, Malual, runs track and field at Penn State.
