Happy Twosday: Why today’s date is such a mathematical rarity

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Double the twos, double the fun.

Tuesday marks a palindrome: It’s Feb. 22, 2022, or 2/22/22.

A palindrome is a sequence that reads the same backward and forward.

The date carries a lot of weight from scientific and mathematical perspectives. Mathematicians all around the world, including one right here at home — Babak Esalami, associate professor at Widener University — are celebrating this series of twos because it’s simply so improbable.

“Basically, having the numbers two for February and 22nd for the day and the number 2022 is a very, very rate event,” Eslami explained. “Having twos in that sequence is very low. It’s only four in 1 million days that such a thing happens.”

In fact, every day for the rest of the month is a palindrome:
2/23/22
2/24/22
2/25/22
2/26/22
2/27/22
and 2/28/22

But one aspect of today's date makes it even more exciting.

“It’s on the second day of the week, the Tuesday, makes it especially more rare,” he said.

Happy Twosday.
