ROCKAWAY TWP., N.J. (KYW Newsradio) -- First responders in New Jersey have begun receiving COVID-19 vaccines. Gov. Phil Murphy looked on as shots were given to police officers and firefighters Friday morning at a vaccination site in Morris County.

There will be a few more large-scale vaccination sites like thw one at Rockaway Townsquare in South Jersey -- at Rowan University, Moorestown Mall and the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Murphy says there’s still not enough vaccine supply to meet demand, and the operation of these sites won’t reach full scale until more doses become available.

Because of that, he says, he is expecting the next couple of months to be very difficult.

"But there is no question there is light at the end of the tunnel. And today’s gathering, what’s going on behind us right now, is as good a piece of evidence of that as we can find," he said.

All first responders, police, fire, EMS and health care workers are eligible to sign up for vaccines at these sites through the state's online portal. When the supply catches up to support it, the sites will be providing about 2,400 doses per day.
