PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There are many important tools that we use to fight diseases, and vaccines are one. However, childhood vaccines have become a key area of debate.

One of the major reasons is the fact that health care leaders have not effectively communicated the various ways that vaccines work, as well as the track record of the vaccines that are in use.

This week, a major report from Vanderbilt University shared that since 1994, childhood vaccines have prevented 508 million illnesses, 32 million hospitalizations and more than 1 million deaths.

In a national conversation, statistics like these are important to share.
