SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) -- There are still thousands of ballots left to count, but with 80% of the vote in, the Associated Press called the Second District race for Republican Jeff Van Drew over Democratic challenger Amy Kennedy.

Van Drew drew the ire of Democrats when he switched parties last year, becoming a Republican and pledging his “undying support” to President Donald Trump. It earned him a prime speaking slot at the Republican National Convention and a rally with the president in Wildwood.

Kennedy, the wife of former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, bucked South Jersey power broker George Norcross to win the Democratic nomination for the seat. It was a bruising and expensive contest for the district covering Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties.

So far, Kennedy has not conceded the race.
