UNIVERSITY CITY (KYW Newsradio) — Black smoke billowed from the I-76 tunnel beneath Schuylkill Avenue Thursday afternoon after a vehicle fire in the eastbound lane.

Fire crews said they got a call about the fire a little after 2 p.m. and were on the scene in minutes to put the fire out. They initially shut down 76 in both directions to deal with the blaze, creating a massive traffic backlog.

Authorities also reported no injuries in the fire.

The eastbound lane of 76 reopened first a little after 2:20 p.m. and the westbound lane reopened around 20 minutes later, at 2:40 p.m.

The fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the vehicle fire.
