PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Demolition is underway on the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge at Penn’s Landing, and lane closures are in effect along Columbus Boulevard all week.
It’s part of a five-year, $329 million project to build a park over I-95 between Walnut and Chestnut streets, reconnecting Old City with the riverfront.
Pedestrians haven’t been allowed to walk across the bridge, spanning I-95 and Columbus Boulevard, since September.
Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Monday, Nov. 27 to Friday, Dec. 1, northbound Columbus Boulevard will be reduced from three lanes to one between Lombard Circle and Market Street.

Demolition started Saturday on the rotunda staircase, located on the east side of the bridge. The entire job will take several weeks.

PennDOT expects the section over Columbus Boulevard to be demolished by mid-December and the span over I-95 finished by late January.
While demolition crews are working over I-95, PennDOT said full closures of the interstate will be in effect, mostly overnight or during off-peak hours.
