PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA is working to clear its Broad Street subway drains after a water leak again led to icy car crashes on the Roosevelt Boulevard Expressway this week.

For weeks, water has been leaking from the Broad Street Line onto the highway surface below, and the recent cold temperatures created icy conditions. There were several crashes this week, including one involving an overturned vehicle.

SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said the transit agency is trying to make sure that any water in drains over the boulevard is removed.

"What we're doing is going out and having crews vacuum the drains and jet any water from our drains. And we're trying to make sure that any water that is coming from the subway goes into the subway's drainage system," he explained.

Busch said SEPTA is not sure whether the original source of the water is on SEPTA property, but workers will remain on the scene for now.

"We're going to keep sending those crews out until we are 100% sure that we don't have any water that may leak from the subway structure onto the boulevard," he assured.

For the last several days, PennDOT has spread salt to Roosevelt Boulevard under Broad Street to try to improve traction on that icy stretch.
