NORRISTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A water main burst in Norristown, Montgomery County early Monday morning. With the temperature below 20 degrees, it created an icy mess.

The 16-inch water main broke at Penn and Cherry streets, a residential area near the Montgomery County Courthouse and a few blocks away from the Norristown Transportation Center.

Water poured down the street, covering the road and quickly turning into ice.

A Pennsylvania American Water spokesperson said they have not yet identified the cause of the break. It started around 3:30 a.m.

Crews have since isolated the valve and drained that part of the system, the spokesperson said, and they were able to stop the flow around 7:30 a.m.

About 265 properties in the area were without water for several hours, according to Pennsylvania American Water.

Several county facilities closed Monday as a result, including:
• Montgomery County Courthouse
• One Montgomery Plaza
• Montgomery County Family Court facility
• Supervision Services Adult Probation offices

All other county facilities, including all magisterial district courts and the Youth Center Court facility, remain open to the public.
