PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — We admire people who fight back against serious illnesses, or people who deal with getting older by focusing on positive things and minimizing the negative. This is called resilience, and it is defined as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to life's challenges.

According to a researcher from Harvard, there is no cookie-cutter approach to resilience. There are a few things we all have in common that can help us deal with serious health issues. We can reach out and find physical, mental and social resources.

However, each of us is different and our life experiences determine how we cope. The worst mistake a physician, friend or family member can make is comparing an individual's resilience.

There is no one-size-fits-all, and something that works for one person may not work for others.
