NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — You may notice more hairy faces this month as men ditch the razors to raise awareness about men’s health.
The No Shave November movement started in 2009 as a grassroots effort on Facebook by the Hill family of Illinois in memory of their father, Matthew, who passed away from colon cancer in November 2007. In New Jersey, the Willingboro Police Department has been doing it for six years. Sgt. Mark Klaus never misses it.
“When you look at something like prostate cancer fatality rates, men who are affected by that, it’s just nice to have that awareness and be able to have those conversations for men to stay proactive and check up on different things they might be dealing with,” he said.
What began as a tribute is now a movement meant to spark conversation and raise money for cancer, as well as mental health issues such as depression and suicide.
Detective Elijah Hart says it’s important to bring awareness to men's physical and mental health and break generational patterns of being too proud to admit when you need help. He wants to lead by example.
“Let them know that it is okay. Look at me, I'm getting help. There are things that I see I need to improve on, and I go out and it makes me a better person. Makes me live happier, healthier, and live a long time to see my kids grow,” he said.
Officer Allen hasn’t touched a razor all month and admits that men are not as quick to seek help, but they do need to speak up.
“You should definitely seek either professional help or somebody that you can trust and rely on in the family or a close friend," he said.
Some of the officers say they wear their beards year-round, but others choose to shave in December. Detective Brandon Norris said it's very important to give back to the community.
“It allows you to get in front of your health issues. Health is wealth, and as long as you're in front of your, you know, mental and actual health, you'll be better prepared.”
Lieutenant Brandon Thomas said the officers enjoy giving back to the community.
“Every month, we do something to raise money towards a cause. So next month will be Toys for Tots. After that, we'll find another nonprofit organization to give to,” Thomas said.
