PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An officer with the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run in Voorhees Township over the weekend.
The Camden County Prosecutor's Office said 34-year-old Shakira Carter, of Cherry Hill, was driving in the area of Evesham Road and Alpha Avenue around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, when she struck a pedestrian walking a dog.
The 75-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital, where she later died. The dog was killed at the scene.
Investigators said Carter returned to the scene in a different vehicle.
She is now charged with second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.
Carter has been suspended from her job as an officer with the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, pending the outcome of the case.
