BALA CYNWYD, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Police in Lower Merion Township are looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in a wheelchair early Monday morning.
It happened around 2 a.m. at City Avenue and Conshohocken State Road.
Officials say the 61-year-old victim was in a wheelchair — which was left behind with other debris on the side of the road — when she was hit.
“The victim was ejected from her wheelchair upon impact of the striking vehicle and suffered critical injuries," said Detective Sergeant Michael Keenan.
Kennan says a person who was passing down the roadway at the time of the incident called 911.
“The person … saw that something that happened. A personal risk of themselves, stopped their vehicle in the middle of a rainy night on City Avenue, did the right thing, put their flashers on, and at least tried to protect this person from other vehicles.”
The woman, who police say was unhoused, was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Police are looking for a dark-colored Toyota Camry with tinted windows, which Keenan says probably has some damage to the passenger side.
“This is a person who was in the middle of the roadway in the middle of the night being struck by a vehicle. It’s important that people know that, it’s important that people take action and we find the person that’s responsible for it," Keenan said.
Investigators say surveillance footage shows the suspect in a parking lot near the scene, where he appeared to inspect the car after the crash.
