PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman has been sentenced after admitting to brutally abusing and killing a two-year-old in 2017.

Jedayah Nesmith openly pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in Feburary, admitting to killing the boy who was in her care.

The judge sentenced Nesmith to at least 23 years in prison.

"That little boy suffered incredible abuse and injuries, including being deprived of food and water. He went from being in the 95th percentile in weight down to the fifth percentile at the time of his death. He was extremely emaciated," said Philadelphia prosecutor Nora Greenberg on Monday.

"He had numerous contusions and other injuries about his body, numerous bone fractures. He had hemorrhaging on his brain and a variety of other injuries, such that the medical examiner was able to pronounce the cause of death was homicidal violence."

The child’s mother was in a romantic relationship with Nesmith, and had asked for her to care for the boy.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said they found out the child was dead when Nesmith called her ex-boyfriend, asking him to get rid of the toddler’s body.

"It was just for her to get 23 1/2 to 47 years, instead of her getting life without parole," Krasner added.
