PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The family of a man killed during an encounter with University of Pennsylvania police two years ago is now suing the school for wrongful death.
Penn police tried to stop 52-year-old Ronald Harmon when they saw him taking a package from a building’s foyer at 42nd and Spruce streets on Nov. 5, 2024.
An officer used a Taser on Harmon, and he fell and hit his head. He later died.
Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who represents the family, said officers should not have used the Taser.
“We know that Ronald Harmon was not a threat to the police at the time,” he said. “He was running away. They violated their own policies when they Tased him from behind.”
Penn said it “extends its deepest condolences” to the Harman family for their tragic loss but doesn’t have any comment on pending litigation.
