KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AUDACY) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant Britt Reid, son of former Philadelphia Eagles head coach and current Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, appeared in Jackson County court Tuesday, where Circuit Judge Charles H. McKenzie sentenced him to three years in prison for a DUI crash that left six people injured.
One of those injured was 5-year-old Ariel Young, whose balance, eyesight and ability to walk have been diminished from the resulting brain trauma.
Two months earlier, Reid had pled guilty to driving while intoxicated, causing serious bodily injury, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years behind bars. Reid's legal team had sought probation in lieu of jail time, arguing the 37-year-old had shown remorse for the damage and suffering he caused.
Reid was arrested Feb. 4 of last year, a week before the Chiefs would play — and ultimately lose to — the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV. The Chiefs subsequently placed Reid on administrative leave, then chose not to retain him after his contract expired.
According to police, Reid was driving 84 mph (19 mph above the speed limit) when his truck struck two parked cars on an entrance ramp to I-435, not far from the Chiefs' facility at Arrowhead Stadium. Reid's blood-alcohol level was measured at .113% two hours after the crash, which is above Missouri's legal limit of .08%.
The accident effectively ended Reid's career, which began as a training camp intern with the Eagles (who his father was coaching at the time) in 2009. He had been on the Chiefs' staff since 2013, coaching linebackers and defensive linemen, among other responsibilities.
"Ariel's life forever changed because of Britt Reid," Young's mother, Felicia Miller, said in a statement read at Tuesday's sentencing. "She will deal with this for the rest of her life."
The family's attorney, Tom Porto, announced last November that the Chiefs had agreed to compensate Young with whatever medical and financial assistance was necessary for her recovery.
