The sheriff’s office said it responded shortly after midnight to reports of shots fired in a group of 200 to 300 people at Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane.
Witnesses said they were gathered for what was supposed to be a Juneteenth celebration.
"Everybody ran, and it was chaos," said witness Craig Lotcie.
Ten patients were transported to four hospitals with injuries ranging from graze wounds to more serious gunshot wounds. DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Eric Swanson told reporters Sunday morning other patients just walked in.
Police say two people were in critical condition following the shooting.
The ages and conditions of the victims were not immediately available, officials said.
“The motive behind this incident is unclear, and this is still an active investigation,” said Swanson.
This is the sixth mass shooting in the state this month alone.
