Major websites for companies such as Delta Air Lines, Capitol One and UPS were unavailable on Thursday because of a widespread outage at a distributed computing network company, according to a CNBC report.

British Airways, GoDaddy, Vanguard, LastPass, AT&T and Costco were among other websites loading slowly or showing "DNS failure" during the service interruption. Twitter profile Downdetector reported many sites were down Thursday afternoon.

DNS services act like phone books for the internet, allowing web browsers to access online resources such as websites, according to Cloudflare.com.

Distributed content delivery provider Akamai released a website notice saying that the company was investigating "an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service."

Around 1 p.m. Thursday, Akamai tweeted that a fix for the problem had been implemented.

Some users may be able to access the sites, while others cannot, according to the CNBC report.

While the outage persisted, Delta customers could not check in for flights or look up fares online. However, the company said customers can always check in with a Delta agent at the airport.

A message on Delta’s website read: "We’re experiencing temporary technical issues serving our customers on delta.com and the Fly Delta mobile app. We apologize for the delay, and are working to restore the site as quickly as possible."
