Police officer kills man in traffic stop incident in Minneapolis suburb

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) — A police officer in Brooklyn Center shot and killed a 20-year-old man who they say attempted to flee a traffic stop on Sunday.

According to a release by the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers pulled over the man, identified as Daunte Wright, a Black man, for a traffic violation just before 2 p.m. Sunday. Officers found out that the driver had an outstanding warrant, and he attempted to flee the scene. An officer fired their gun and struck the driver. The driver was able to continue for several blocks before hitting another car.

The shooting sparked outrage and protests around the scene. Some protests turned violent as police cars were damaged.

After leaving the scene, protesters marched to the Brooklyn Center Police Department. The department gave a 10-minute warning and called it an "unlawful assembly" before firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters.

UPDATE (10:49 p.m.): Reports of looting around Brooklyn Center businesses are coming in.

UPDATE (10:58 p.m.): Metro Transit has suspended service to the Brooklyn Center Transit Center at the request of local authorities.

UPDATE (11:51 p.m.): The National Guard has arrived in Brooklyn Center

UPDATE (1:08 a.m.): A curfew has been placed on the city of Brooklyn Center until 6 a.m. Monday.
