As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, people across the U.S. are preparing to celebrate with family and friends. However, where fun can be found on this holiday, there are also risks. KYW medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough has some tips for avoiding them.
“When it comes to celebrating with family and friends, there are some warnings that never grow old,” he said.
Here’s McDonough’s list:
· No drinking and driving
· Wear seat belts and use car seats for younger children when driving
· Be vigilant with young children, especially around pools and bodies of water
· Never leave grills unattended
· Keep a close watch on bonfires, especially in windy conditions
“Flames can be pushed around by wind gusts,” the doctor explained. “Finally, remember to cook beef properly and make sure salads are refrigerated, not left out in the sun.”
Last year, Audacy also reported on the estimated 378,000 stranded motorists that AAA planned to rescue year over the holiday weekend and offered tips for not becoming one of those motorists. This year, AAA expects more than 45 million people to travel and road trips are set to reach a record level.
