DETROIT (WWJ) -- Do you still have holiday cards and packages that need to be mailed out? Well, maybe it's finally time to find your way to the post office.

The U.S. Postal Service is now in their busiest week for shipping, mailing and delivering -- which starts on Monday and runs through Saturday, Dec. 18 -- according to Detroit's USPS spokeswoman Elizabeth Najduch.

"The postal service recommends, obviously, that you ship and mail as early as possible because the longer you wait the fewer options that you have," said Nyduch.

Nyduch said the postal service is expected to process and deliver more than 12 billion pieces of mail from Thanksgiving all the way through New Year's.

And if you want your letters and packages to arrive by Christmas, you need items for retail ground service in the mail by Dec. 15, first class by Dec. 17 and international mail by Dec. 13 for most countries.
