NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- It won’t be a dog day afternoon next month for the Westminster Kennel Club.

The 146th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden has been postponed from its original dates on Jan. 25 and 26, 2022 due to the continuously rising COVID-19 cases in the city and nationwide.
“The health and safety of all participants in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show are paramount. We appreciate the community’s continued interest and support as we delay the show to a time when we can safely convene,” officials said in a statement.
The show is still due to go on, but at an unknown date that’ll be announced in the future.
The country’s second-oldest continuously running sports event (behind the Kentucky Derby) was set to return to MSG after moving outdoors to the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown last year without spectators.
According to the group, it’s the longest nationally televised live dog show, dating back to 1948.
Last year’s competition, the first not held at the Garden, crowned a Pekingese breed named Wasabi as its Best in Show.
