(Audacy) — A massive boom was heard in the Pittsburgh area on New Year’s Day, leaving residents wondering what caused the noise and ground to shake.

According to the National Weather Service, the noise was believed to be caused by a meteor that exploded.

On Saturday, Allegheny County officials tweeted that there had been calls to 911 about the disturbance. Officials did not know what caused the incident but had confirmed there was no seismic activity and no thunder or lightning when the incident happened.

While county officials had no idea what caused the noise, the NWS said their data showed a flash in the area, which was not lightning, around 11:26 a.m.

They did not confirm for certain that it was a meteor that caused the noise and ground to tremble, but they did say in a tweet that it was “the most likely explanation at this time.”
