The Philadelphia Zoo said one of its red pandas has died. Eleven-year-old Khumbie was diagnosed with cancer during an annual exam and was humanely euthanized.
The zoo said red pandas are known as “cat bears” due to their tendency to strike out in bear-like fashion when cornered, as well as their semi-retractile claws.
Red pandas are classified as endangered in the wild and are native to the high-altitude, temperate forests of the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.
