Hercules Posey was a well-known figure around Philadelphia in the 1790s — well-dressed, shopping the markets for the finest food and imported wines — fitting for his job as chef to President George Washington. But Hercules was a slave. For all he achieved, he was subject to Washington’s whims, and Michael Coard of Avenging the Ancestors Coalition says Washington sent him back to plantation work in Virginia.
