With gas prices at an all-time high, you might find yourself considering a hybrid or electric vehicle.
The savings from green cars don’t just extend to your pockets, however, as they are also beneficial for the environment.
To help inform future vehicle purchases, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released the GreenerCars ratings for 2022.
Over 1,000 car models were surveyed, including gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles, which were then given a Green Score based on the environmental damage index (EDX). The index looks at the total environmental harm caused by a vehicle through its lifecycle.
While Earth911 notes that it’s quite a surprise that the highest-ranking and thus “greenest” vehicle is a plug-in hybrid, it might be a comforting find if you are trying to be more environmentally conscious but don’t feel ready to make the jump to a full electric car just yet.
The Toyota Prius Prime, a plug-in hybrid, topped the list with a Green Score of 69.
The Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid snagged a 68 score.
The top five was rounded out by the fully electric Mini Cooper SE Hardtop 2 Door with a score of 67, the electric Nissan Leaf with a 67, and the plug-in hybrid Kia Niro with a 65.
In total, four are EVs, while the rest are gas/electric powered hybrids (HEVs) or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) that have a larger battery allowing them to run for longer using power from the grid.
According to Consumer Reports, the rollout of EVs, HEVs, and PHEVs provides good alternative-fuel vehicle options.
In addition to providing energy-efficient transportation, these vehicles lower or eliminate or reduce emissions, diminish noise, and reduce operating costs.
And since it’s tax season, you might be able to take advantage of some tax credits and breaks if you make the switch.
