Giving us some 2012 leaked A$AP Rocky assisted “Ridin’ (Freestyle)” vibes, the Andrew Watt and Cirkut produced, Clayton Johnson co-written “Tough” takes the singer from her usual ethereal, forlorn sound into an introduction of Country Lana, over a twangy-trap beat.
Del Rey packs the track with a plethora of Country references, no doubt a nod to her love for Oklahoma, singing “Tough like the scuff on a pair of old leather boots / Like the blue-collar, red-dirt attitude / Like a .38 made out of brass / Tough like the stuff in your grandpa's glass,” breathlessly on the song’s chorus. While Quavo, on the other hand, with a beat drop switches up the tempo, rapping about “808s beatin’ in the trunk in Atlanta” and “Standin' through the storm, still shinin' like a diamond in the rough” in his verse.
The pair’s long-awaited duet arrived with a vibey, vintage-y, hazy music video. Set against a rural backdrop, an iced out Quavo is seen driving a massive tank looking SUV out to the country, where he and Del Rey play guitar, almost kiss, and hug — a lot.
Del Rey has been readying a foray into a more Country sound since last year, when she covered songs like John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man.” But “Tough” is actually our first taste of Lasso, aka Lana’s next album and take on the genre so many other artists have recently decided to try on for size.
