The final out of the Red Sox' 5-4 win over the Blue Jays Sunday fell softly into Alex Verdugo's glove to secure the sweep over Toronto.
Fitting.
The day after Verdugo secured the Sox' victory with a dead-perfect throw from right field, gunning down Bo Bichette at home plate, the outfielder played hero once again. This time it came via a go-ahead solo homer on Jordan Romano's first pitch in the ninth inning.
Romano has only given up four homers all season, two of them have now come to Verdugo.
The win allowed for a seventh straight win over the Blue Jays this season, this after going 3-16 against Toronto.
If not for Verdugo, the optimism for the Red Sox would have centered around Jarren Duran. The center fielder went 5-for-5 with four doubles, raising his batting average to .305 and his OPS to .835.
The win helped temper of the bad news that came with Garrett Whitlock being forced from the game with right elbow tightness after just one inning.
The Red Sox would use six pitchers, with Nick Pivetta starring thanks to his four innings in which allowed just one run over two hits.
