The Patriots have been the hottest team in the AFC over the last couple months, winning seven straight games and climbing to the top spot in the conference standings.
Which AFC team is the biggest threat to New England down the stretch and into the playoffs, though?
Making his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show Monday, CBS analyst and WFAN host Boomer Esiason gave his pick, and it shouldn’t be too surprising.
“I think Kansas City. Kansas City’s the team,” Esiason said. “The last five weeks, their defense has been great. One of the reasons their defense has been good, and this usually doesn’t happen during the season, is an in-season trade happened. That happened between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Chiefs acquired Melvin Ingram. Once they acquired Melvin Ingram, who I think the last five games has averaged about 35 plays per game, they were able to take Chris Jones and move him down to defensive tackle, and he’s been a wrecking ball down there.
“They’ve been healthy now. They haven’t had to score 30 points per game. Now, they did yesterday, but they don’t have to score 30 points per game to win games like they had to earlier in the year. … I think Kansas City is the one team, with their quarterback [Patrick Mahomes] and their special playmaking abilities, will be the one team I think that can give the Patriots the toughest time.”
The Chiefs have won six in a row, including a blowout 48-9 win over the Raiders on Sunday.
