One of the items still on Don Sweeney's to-do list on deadline day was to add some depth to the right side of the Bruins' defense, preferably someone who would also bring some physicality. Now he has done that.
The team announced that it has acquired right-shot defenseman Josh Brown and a 2022 conditional seventh-round pick from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Zach Senyshyn and a 2022 fifth-round pick.
Brown, 28, is in his fourth NHL season, second with the Senators. He spent his first two with the Florida Panthers, who drafted him in the sixth round back in 2013.
Brown is listed at 6-foot-5, 217 pounds. He brings little to the table offensively, but is a physical presence in the defensive end who is willing to drop the gloves. He has zero goals, six assists and four fights this season in 46 games with an average ice time of 13:59.
He likely won't crack the Bruins' top six, but will serve as depth in the event of injuries or games where they want to make sure they have an enforcer-type in the lineup.
Brown is a free agent after this season and carries a cap hit of $1.2 million.
Meanwhile, the deal also spells the end of Senyshyn's time in the Bruins organization. The Bruins infamously drafted Senyshyn in the first round back in 2015, but he never panned out, having played just 14 NHL games to this point with one goal and two assists. Senyshyn requested a trade earlier this season and now gets his wish.
The NHL trade deadline is Monday at 3 p.m. If there's another deal to come for the Bruins, we would expect it to be for forward help.
