Celtics free up roster spot with trade

The Celtics made a minor trade Thursday, but it's one that could help them out down the line.

According to multiple reports, Boston is trading forward/center Noah Vonleh to the San Antonio Spurs along with cash considerations. The Athletic's Shams Charania was the first to report the move.

MassLive's Brian Robb reports that the Celtics are getting a top-55 protected future second-round pick in return. It's possible the C's will never actually see that pick.

Most importantly, the move frees up a roster spot for a potential trade or signing in the future, and does so before Vonleh's contract would have been guaranteed for the season on Monday. It will also reduce the Celtics' tax bill until they do fill the spot.

Vonleh appeared in 23 games for the Celtics this season, but was averaging just 7.4 minutes, 1.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
