Christian Gonzalez agrees to blockbuster deal with Patriots

The New England Patriots and All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez have finally agreed to a contract extension, just before the start of the regular season, and it’s a record-setting deal.

As first reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it's a four-year deal worth up to $135 million, with $102 million guaranteed.

The deal makes Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL -- topping the deal Devon Witherspoon signed with Seattle last month ($132 million total, $101 million guaranteed) -- and the richest contract ever awarded to a New England Patriot.

New England selected Gonzalez with the 2023 17^th overall draft pick – the final first-round pick Bill Belichick made at the helm of the franchise. He spent most of his rookie season on injured reserve after an exciting four-game debut but returned in 2024 with a glowing sophomore performance that earned him second team All-Pro honors. After a hamstring injury kept him out of a handful of games to begin the 2025 season, he was named to the Pro Bowl and had a standout Super Bowl 60 performance, allowing just three catches and 36 yards against a Seattle Seahawks team led by Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Speculation around his pending extension began well before the Patriots picked up with fifth-year option in April. Gonzalez refrained from portions of mandatory minicamp, but was a full participant once training camp arrived.

During the first week of camp, Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters the front office had extended a contract offer to Gonzalez, but the cornerback refrained from discussing it during his own availability, days later.

“A ton of respect for Mr. Kraft for what he’s done with this franchise. It’s just something we don’t want to handle in the media. Keep that with the team and my team,” he said.

The Patriots’ secondary has the potential to be an elite group this year, as they return cornerback Carlton Davis Jr. and Marcus Jones, and added All-Pro safety Kevin Byard to play alongside sophomore standout Craig Woodson.
