Why the Celtics' interest in Damian Lillard could be a mistake
Grant Williams' time with the Celtics has come to an end. According to multiple reports, Boston is sending Williams to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team sign-and-trade.
The Mavs are sending Reggie Bullock and an unprotected pick to the San Antonio Spurs, while the Celtics and Mavs are both receiving a pair of second-round picks in the deal.
According to Shams Charania, Williams is signing a four-year, $54 million contract.
HoopsHype's Yossi Gozlan reports that the Celtics will also get a traded player exception worth about $6.3 million. Had the Celtics signed Williams to the same deal Dallas is, it would have put them into the second apron of the luxury tax and raised their luxury tax bill by $40 million.
Williams, 24, spent four seasons in Boston after getting drafted 22nd overall in 2019. He had a career-high 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 25.9 minutes per game this past season while shooting 39.5% from three, but he found himself in and out of the rotation down the stretch and into the playoffs.
Williams may have been moving on this offseason anyways as he looked to maximize his minutes and earnings, but the Celtics' trade for Kristaps Porzingis pretty much served as the final nail in the coffin.
