gresh & fauria: Breaking News - The Patriots and TE Hunter Henry agree on a three-year deal

The Patriots made a massive move on Friday with one of their internal pending free agents.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, New England is set to bring back tight end Hunter Henry. The two sides have reportedly agreed on a three-year deal with $27 million in base salary with a maximum value of $30 million.

Henry was set to hit unrestricted free agency next week and was viewed as the top tight end on the market. Instead? He returns to Foxborough.

The 29-year-old Henry was drafted by the then-San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft and after five seasons on the West Coast, signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Patriots in 2021. Over three seasons in New England, Henry has hauled in 133 passes for 1,531 yards and 17 touchdowns. He led the team in scores in both 2021 and 2023.

Henry’s return to New England is not only important on the field, as he's currently their only tight end under contract, but also off the field and in the locker room. The tight end was named a team captain heading into season and, when speaking about the Patriots’ leadership on the offensive side of the ball with WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show last month, his new head coach Jerod Mayo mentioned Henry among the bunch.
