Ian Eagle and Charles Davis were on the call for Patriots-Steelers Sunday, and yada, yada, yada, showed why they may actually be CBS’ best NFL team.

They were sharp and hilarious during the Patriots’ 17-14 win over the Steelers, which featured few highlight-worthy plays.

But when one arose, Eagle and Davis made an incredible call. Let’s say they’re connecting a little better at this early stage of the season than Mac Jones and DeVante Parker.

Faced with a 3rd-and-3 at the Pittsburgh 44-yard line late in the first half, Jones hurled the ball down the sideline towards Nelson Agholor. Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon jumped up to contest the pass, but Agholor took control of the ball, and sprinted into the end zone for a 44-yard score. Finally, somebody on the Patriots made a big play! (Agholor caught six passes for 110 yards in his best performance as a Patriot.)

Davis had a call that matched the moment.

At least it did for all of the Seinfeld fans out there, including this humble blogger.

“Good coverage by Witherspoon. But Agholor just goes over the top, and takes it from him,” said Davis. “That ball was essentially in the bread basket of Ahkello Witherspoon, and Nelson Agholor said, ‘Uh-uh! I’m snatching it away.’ And there goes Nelson Agholor with the marble rye into the end zone — for all of you Seinfeld fans.”

Witherspoon really got burned, huh?

Shortly thereafter, Eagle followed up with a Seinfeld reference of his own.

“Mac Jones! That was real, and spectacular,” said Eagle.

It most certainly was!

Given the occasionally pathetic nature of the contest — the Patriots stuffing the Steelers on a 2-yard screen pass on 3rd-and-8 and then going 3-and-out on their next drive was downright embarrassing — it’s worth appreciating the work of two pros in the booth. This was the first Patriots and Steelers game that kicked off at 1:00 p.m. since 1998.

The Patriots will probably need to win a few more games before we start seeing Eagle and Davis more consistently over the baffling stylings of Adam Archuleta.
