Anything is possible, except Kevin Garnett coaching the Celtics.
In an Instagram post Wednesday, Garnett preemptively shut down the inevitable rumors about him stepping onto Boston's sideline next season. ""FREEEEEAAAKKINN NO.. AH HELL NAH!," he wrote. "I'd [be] hired n' fired all in the same week. Couldn't coach ish. I know my strengths. I'm [knowledgeable], passionate, and skilled. You need a great deal of patience to coach in any league."
As a player, Garnett was known for his fiery demeanor, and proclivity for impassioned expletive-laden tirades. He's probably right to acknowledge those characteristics may not translate to a full-time coaching role.
"To all the coaches out there that put up with so [expletive] much!! But it's a no.. #stopasking," he added.
With career earnings of $326 million (the second-most in NBA history), Garnett doesn't need the aggravation of coaching an 82-game regular season. Being a beloved retired franchise legend is a much better deal.
With that said, the Celtics would still be wise to consider various ex-players for the position, especially ones with championship pedigrees. A couple of years ago, Tatum proclaimed he would win five championships by the time he's 28 years old.
Considering he's 23, time is running out. He needs somebody to show him the way.
At the least, maybe Garnett can offer some motivational words.
