Should we file this one in the "Manny Being Manny" section, or could there be something to the latest from one of baseball's most colorful figures?
Following the firings of Mets hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant Tom Slater, Ramirez looks to be interested in any potential job openings with Steve Cohen's ball club, making a pitch over Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.
Ramirez, who was most recently released by the Australian Baseball League's Sydney Blue Sox before he could begin his stint as a player-coach, does have some big-league coaching experience. He was hired by the Cubs as a hitting consultant prior to the 2015 season, along with Kevin Youkilis, when Theo Epstein was running the baseball operations department in Chicago.
However, Ramirez didn't stay in town for long, deciding that he still had some playing time left in him and opting to take his talents to Japan's independent Shikoku Island League as a member of the Kochi Fighting Dogs. That didn't last long either, and he continued to search for more opportunities, even saying that he was interested in playing in the Chinese Professional Baseball League just last year. His practice hacks don't look half bad, either, for what that's worth.
Could he be the spark that the Mets need, both in terms of their baseball performance and their overall spirits? Given that they score just 3.30 runs per game, which is the second fewest in all of baseball, any offering of help could likely be taken into consideration. And based on what Pete Alonso told reporters, it sounds like a pick-me-up is certainly in store after the decision to fire Davis and Slater shook up the team.
So, again I ask, could Manny be the answer? It apparently wouldn't upset Twitter's lively baseball community.
