Craig Breslow has been busy on trade deadline day. After acquiring catcher Adley Rutschman in a blockbuster move earlier Monday, the Boston Red Sox made headlines again late in the afternoon by reportedly sending infielder Marcelo Mayer to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed reliever Erik Miller.
In another deal, the Red Sox acquired outfielder Eli White from the Atlanta Braves for right-handed pitcher Tyler Uberstine.
It wasn't long ago that the Red Sox had the highest of hopes for Mayer, who was the fourth overall pick in 2021 and one of the top prospects in all of baseball for years. Mayer has struggled to stay healthy and struggled to put it all together at the major league leverl, though.
This year, Mayer was hitting .220 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and a .594 OPS in 70 games. He has been out since June 25 with a forearm injury.
In Miller, the Red Sox get another power arm that could be used late in games. He has made 38 appearances (32.2 innings) this season and has a 2.76 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 45 strikeouts and 22 walks. He consistently touches high 90s with his fastball and sinker, but the walks are the biggest concern.
As for White, acquired from the Braves, he's a versatile veteran who can play all three outfield positions and is good defensively. The 32-year-old is a right-handed bat who is hitting .233 with five home runs, 17 RBIs and a .691 OPS in 69 games this season.
