On Sunday, Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith left practice early after getting tangled with a defensive back in a fairly non-competitive drill.
Smith got attended to on the sideline by head trainer Jim Whalen and other members of the athletic training staff before moving to the athletic training area in the back of the fields. After several minutes there, Smith went back inside the facilty.
It didn't look too severe at the time, and that appears to be the case following tests.
According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Smith suffered a low ankle sprain, which isn't considered overly serious.
There's no timetable on a potential return, but given his importance to the Patriots' offense this season, the team will likely be extra cautious.
Smith's injury comes on the day the Patriots got tight end Hunter Henry back on the field after he suffered a shoulder injury a week ago.
